A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Greetings Sisters and Allies, 

 

Welcome to the SLSV Sisterhood News, the special Black Women Ran 2024 edition. This moment in American history is everything that our foremothers and our current sisters and allies have fought so tirelessly for. As black women, we have worked tirelessly to advocate and fight for the advancement of the black community, the black family, and for political leadership. It is essential that we continue to advocate and elect black women to elected offices not only due to the effective work that black women commit to, but to also inspire the rising generation of black women leaders.

 

Our commitment is to use this space to keep you informed about things that impact Black women politically, from Black candidates to events to policy. The goal is to be a trusted hub for Black women and our allies for leadership and communication tools.

 

If you are like me, many days I am in information overload, and I just need it to be simple. Well, we can’t make it simple BUT we can break it down and make sure that we share accurate information to fuel our fight for democracy and prosperity.

Black Women Candidates 2024 Quick Facts

Throughout the election, Sisters Lead Sisters Vote has gathered 8 quick fun facts on black women running in 2024. Check out these incredible facts! Please share these facts online with the a SLSV hashtag!

  1. There are 1,187 black women identified as running for office as of October 4th. 

  2. Black women are running for office in 48 states, which is up for 44 states in 2022.

  3. There are 3 black women are in the running for the US Senate: Lisa Blunt Rochester for Delaware, Valerie McCray for Indiana, and Angela Alsobrooks for Maryland. 

  4. There are 5 black women identified as running for Governor, with 1 black woman on the ballot in November. She is Ester Charlestin, a Democrat running in Vermont. 

  5. 788 black women are running as Democrats, 56 are running as Republicans, 297 are running as non-partisans with seven running as various political parties.  

  6. 118 black women ran for Congress with 104 black women running for a seat in the US House of Representatives and 14 running for a seat in the US Senate. 

  7. Most of the candidates tracked are not incumbents. Out of 1,187 black women, only 423 are running as incumbents. 

  8. There are 786 black women running as Democrats, 56 running as Republicans, 8 are running as Independents, 296 running as non-partisans, 7 running as various political parties, and just 4 candidates running as unaffiliated.
 

The Political Landscape of Black Women Ran 2024 - Mid Year Report

The Political Landscape of Black Women Running in 2024 - Mid Year Report represents the message of Sisters Lead Sisters Vote and its mission to support and amplify Black women’s political leadership and voices. The report highlights key observations and analysis of election conducted as of June 25, 2024. The report contains an analysis of the 2024 landscape, federal races, U.S. Senate races, U.S. House races, State races, and gubernatorial races.

 

The report was created to identify and amplify the visibility of black women running for all levels of office from President of the United States to dog catcher. Most importantly, the report was created to shine a deserved spotlight on the incredible leadership of black women leaders, the work that we’ve done to advance the black community and advocate for overall justice for the black community.

Introduction of the Candidate Yearbook

The Candidate Yearbook is a collection of every black woman that Sisters Lead Sisters Vote has identified as running for office who have either advanced from their primary election race or who have won their general race in 2024. The yearbook identifies black women in all states where black women have either advanced or won their race, their political affiliation, and the district that they are campaigning in. The purpose of the Candidate Yearbook is to further elevate the visibility of the black women candidates. Download the year at the SLSV website and support black women running in your area today!
 

The Black Women Candidates Maps

The Black Women Candidates map is an interactive map created for users to actively click through the number of black women running for US Senate, Congress, State Senate, State House. The interactive map allows you to click on highlighted segments of the map that contains the candidate’s name, the office they are running for, their political affiliation, the status of the race (challenger, incumbent, open), and their primary and general election results.

 

An example of how the map works is if you click on Congress, the map will highlight areas in the country where black women are running. You will see that the Midwest still has a ways to go in electing more black women, regardless of political party, into the U.S House of Representatives.
